I think of Marx as an incredible rhetorician. There is a lot to like there. But his theory was necessarily limited by the developments of the day and the incomplete picture of capitalism that he had at the time. The occult beast had not fully formed in its vile nest in his time, but he still noted the problems. It's those analogies and metaphors that make his ideas easy to sell. He is, in a way, appealing to religious attitudes because he's using a lot of similar language. He's painting a picture of a vast, nigh incomprehensible demon. His biggest mistake was in underestimating just how much people like demons. Or at least, just how much they will tolerate the behavior of demons once that behavior has been normalized. People have been assuming the world is horrible and wicked for all of history. Hard to imagine anything better when that's your worldview.

Two recommendations for your next-year revisiting of the topic: _Occult Features of Anarchism: With Attention to the Conspiracy of Kings and the Conspiracy of the Peoples_ by Erica Lagalisse and _Pagan Anarchism_ by Christopher Scott Thompson. The titles should probably be titillating enough, but summaries can be found easily online. Lagalisse covers in brief in one chapter ("Occult Features of the Marxian Dialectic") what you've dealt with in some detail here, and Barbara Ehrenreich, in her Foreword, says of it, "Be warned: this is a challenging book, one that sent me off to Google page after page." Thompson offers more a history of folk religion, magic, revolutionary politics, and so on, along with suggestions for ways to move forward into a world of Many Gods, No Masters.
